Cookies

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select "Remember Me", your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

We use web analytics tools to understand how visitors interact with our website. These tools may collect information such as your IP address, browser type, referring website, pages visited, and time spent on our site. We may share your information with trusted service providers who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or serving you, provided they agree to keep this information confidential. We comply with Canadian PIPEDA requirements and applicable US state privacy laws regarding data sharing.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Contact form submissions are retained for up to 7 years for business and legal purposes. Analytics data is typically retained for 26 months. You may request earlier deletion of your personal information by contacting us, subject to legal retention requirements.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

What data breach procedures we have in place

In the event of a data breach that poses a real risk of significant harm to individuals, we will notify the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and affected individuals as required by PIPEDA. For breaches affecting US residents, we will comply with applicable state notification requirements. Any third-party data received is handled in accordance with this privacy policy and applicable privacy laws. We ensure that third parties have appropriate consent or legal basis for sharing your information with us.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data

We do not engage in automated decision-making that would significantly affect you, including profiling for marketing purposes. Any automated processing we conduct (such as spam detection for comments) is limited to technical website operations and does not involve decisions that would legally or significantly affect individuals. If we implement automated decision-making in the future, we will update this policy and provide appropriate information about the logic involved and your rights regarding such processing.

Industry regulatory disclosure requirements

As a business operating in Canada, we comply with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial privacy legislation. For US visitors, we comply with applicable state privacy laws including but not limited to the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) where applicable.
